To start off the project we had Helen from the Dunedin Toitu Museum come and talk to us about WW1. We then made a brainstorm to plan out what we wanted to learn about the war topic. We also visited the Toitu Museum and looked at the roll of honour and other historical artefacts from the war.

Hello, we are a group at Saint Dominic’s Catholic College in Auckland, New Zealand and we are excited to learn more about the women’s roles in the war. We are constantly learning new facts as we progress further ahead. We are very committed and are working hard on this topic. We are all looking forward to working with our French school and sharing information. We have realised that the women’s roles in the war were just as important as the men’s as they had to take the men’s jobs and earn money...
Our school, Epsom Girls' Grammar School, was founded in 1917, during the war. While we are remembering WW1, we will also be celebrating our school centennial. It is therefore interesting looking back with the help of the school archivist at the school magazines and newsletter articles from that period. Here are two example that show both the practical actions and the idealistic thoughts of the time.
"The first term subscription went to buy khaki handkerchiefs for our soldiers; the second...
Bonjour!
We have a small group of 10 students - Year 9 and 10 - who are off to France in September this year. At present they are meeting once a week at lunchtime to have some basic french lessons. As we don't offer French as a subject at Albany Junior High School, the daughter of a staff member has come in to teach some basic french vocabulary to them. I have uploaded a couple of videos of our session this week - introducing members of the family and family animals.
We have been...
Each student in the 2014 Year 11 class has created a fictitious teenager as part of their 1.5 Writing portfolio. Their task is to research every day life in the period from 1914 - 1918 and write letters in French to a partner in Amiens who will respond in English. The students incorporate a variety of text types such as articles, brochures and recipes in their letters so they meet the criteria for the 1.3 Achievement Standard. As part of their research, they read a number of old school...
Bonjour and Hi!
St Margaret's College in Christchurch and the Collège Étouvie in Amiens started their co-operation a couple of months ago, firstly by creating a forum for a virtual exchange of ideas, texts, pictures, etc. Have a look at the poppelicot wiki.
Our general idea is to keep this intercultural, bilingual and interdisciplinary project as student centred as possible. Over the coming years, different year levels will participate and contribute to the wiki. In 2014 we focus on year 8...
We have been doing a lot of prep work for this. We have our inquiry focus questions and from that have decided that the first steps will be on the focus of pacifism before WWI, conscientious objectors and opposition to conscription. These first steps will be heavily scaffolded with research booklets and specific tasks. Here is the focus of the students inquiry.
I think that as the students put together work they can report their progress via blogposts:
Disobedience and Rebellion of Soldiers and...
We have made a start at St Dominic's College!
With the interest of at least 30 girls, we have begun to plan a video introduction of our school, ready to send to France.
They are really excited by it – seeking out relatives war records etc.
Onward and upward!
En avant!
