We had a very memorable month in France and visited some of the major sites of the country, including the NZ war memorials, where we saw where some old boys of the school had fallen. It was a very moving and also insightful experience and i do not think that either staff or students will forget this in a hurry. This is the Facebook page of the tour, where there are pictures etc of all the great things we saw whilst in...

Columba College was lucky enough to have a visit from Pascale in our Assembly.
Pascale gave a presentation to the school on the Shared Histories project, and gave us information on how we can get involved from even the smallest level (such as downloading a badge to show our support on social platforms). It was great to have her come in and enthuse some more people to get involved, and to give a better description of what the project is actually about to everyone at school.
On Friday, we had...
The senior students involved in our Shared Histories project at school went down to the Hocken Archives for the afternoon, to spend time researching and finding resources for our project.
There were some amazing sources available to look at. For example there were soldiers' diaries, letters, official histories, troop-ship magazines, amongst many other items. It was a brilliant way for everyone involved to be able to find some sources to use towards their area of interest for our final...
How can we integrate the project in our everyday teaching?
After receiving the attached collection of fictitious letters from soldiers to their loved ones and their replies, written by some of our exchange school's pupils (Troisième 5), I decided to use these letters for an integrated reading and writing exercise with my year 12 IB French class. Each student was paired up with their "relative" and read one of the letters. They then asked and answered some questions about the content of the...
We studied in class, two propaganda posters issued by the french government ( the first poster) and one by the New Zealand government.
The first picture is adressed to the french civilians to give their money for the french army. The second picture is aimed at men to induce them to join the army because thanks to the war they will discover the world.
The french poster is an economical propaganda whereas the New Zealander poster aimed at men to enter the army making them believe it is an...
Mr Coutts from Baradene College in Auckland visited France for two weeks to see the school we are partnered with in Chauny. He met five classes of students at Lycée Professionnel Gay Lussac and met with the teachers there to plan the project. He said it was a really great trip and he came back with photos to show us. The photos (above) are from his visit. Mr Coutts also looked at many places for us to visit next year when we will travel to France. We hope some of the students at Gay Lussac will...
Bonjour à tous
At Wellington College, Year 11 French students have been researching old boys of the College who fought in World War I. Some of these old boys also played in a 1909 rugby match against St Patrick’s College. We are researching specific aspects of the war which these old boys would have been involved in, and we’re partnered with people at Lycée Europeén de Villers-Cotterêt, France. We are talking to these people by email, Skype and Facebook. These old boys...
