Sedition in Dunedin

Letter written in prison by Thomas Cummins with censors marks shown.

Following the Easter Rising in 1916 in Ireland, Irish Republicans living in New Zealand who supported Irish nationalism formed organisations in solidarity and to promote the Irish republican cause. In Dunedin they formed the "Maoriland Irish Society" and published a radical monthly magazine called "The Green Ray". This fell foul of wartime regulations and was supressed in 1918. Wartime regulations which had introduced censorship regulations limited freedom of speech. Many publications written...

Family Soldiers

We decided to take part in a research project involving a family member who was in the First World War. We created a booklet including all of the information we had found, searching online. A few of us couldn't do a family member because they were either from different origins or their family wasn't involved in the war. Those students chose a soldier who fought for us, wasn't a family member, but was still a valued part of the Allies during the war. We found really interesting information...

War horses stories unite two schools from across the world

War horses stories unite two schools from across the world

Nga Tawa students are part of the Shared Histories project between France and New Zealand.
It has been set up to commemorate World War 1 from beginning to end. Our two schools, Nga Tawa Diocesan School in Marton and College Jules Ferry in Conty, have chosen War Horses as our project and we have been exchanging information on the role of the horse during the war.
There has been a special focus on Bess, who survived four years of war and is now buried just out of Bulls. We visited her grave...

Dunedin Exhibition that features a display on Concientious Objectors

Dunedin Exhibition that features a display on Concientious Objectors

An exhibition in the city of Dunedin at Toitū (Otago Settlers Museum) explores the stories of enlistment and departure, conscientious objection and conscription, the horrors and honours of war. In one section titled “Dissenters” they present primary documents on those who refused to fight. The caption on the display said;

“Most Dunedin citizens strongly supported the war effort. Some small groups and individuals, however, refused to participate for political, religious or moral reasons. But...

Albany-Gaillac friendship

Albany-Gaillac friendship

LA BOISSELLE and THIEPVAL

Our school trip to "The Somme 1916 Museum" in Albert " and The Remembrance Trail" in the Somme

Our group among the poppies wreaths

Two weeks ago we visited the Somme 1916 Albert Museum with the school . This visit helped us to realize how soldiers lived in the trenches during the war. Then we went to La Boisselle to see the mine crater where each year on the 1st of July a ceremony is organised to commemorate the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. We send you a photo of the group of pupils who are going to work on our project this year. Our teachers and the English speaking guide also took us to the Tiepval Memorial...
