I just posted this on student notices and sent it to France for them to publish, just in time for la rentrée to get back into Active mode!
Hi students at St Margaret's College in Christchurch and Collège Étouvie in Amiens!
You know that our school takes part in the French - New Zealand history project "Shared Histoires" (Histoire partagée) which commemorates the centenary of World War I. In the context of this exciting 5 year project, a partnership between le collège Etouvie in Amiens and...
Bonjour !
As part of our Shared Histories programme this year, our group will be researching the passive resistance in New Zealand prior to the outbreak of the War.
In this we will be researching significant groups in New Zealand which opposed the compulsory military training that was imposed upon the New Zealand working class by the government. The two main groups we researched are the Socialists and Christians.
The workers from the groups who opposed military training were often subjected...
Over the last week the two Year 12 History classes at Baradene College have each visited the first exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in Auckland, New Zealand. This very good exhibition ‘Entangled Islands: Sāmoa, New Zealand and the First World War’ looks at the New Zealand invasion of German Sāmoa which took place on 29 August 1914. This event would entangle New Zealand and Sāmoa together and have a lasting impact on the cultures...
I painted this image as it depicts a group of New Zealanders at the Battle of the Somme shortly before many in the group died fighting alongside the British and French armies.
The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of WW1.
Deaths exceeded 1 million and, in proportion to New Zealand’s population, we lost a larger amount of lives than any other country involved.
I chose to use this image as I feel this huge loss for New Zealanders is not recognised in the way...
Students in Year 12 History created a timeline of important events in the First World War for New Zealand soldiers.
The Year 10 French World War 1 Remembrance assignments have been displayed in the school library this week. It is giving the whole school the opportunity to remember with us.
Meeting the young ambassadors in Péronne!
We were very glad to meet the young ambassadors in Péronne last Friday. We met in front of the museum of the Great War that they were about to visit. Among them there was Huia, a young student from our partner school ( Stratford)! So, we were lucky to meet her!
It’s a shame that we are actually on summer holidays otherwise we’d have liked to take a few of our students to meet them.

This video recaps what we did with our students in the Somme!
This day trip was the most important part of our partnership with New Zealand this year. The students finally realised the impact of WW1 even today.
They really enjoyed looking for the NZ soldiers' names and took their role very seriously. Many thanks to them....
For us it's the end of the school year now and other students will be involved in the project at the beginning of September.
See you soon on Shared...
Stan Stanfield.
Stan Stanfield is my Great-Grandfather. He fought in several of the battles in World War One. Sidney George Stanfield (Stan) was born in Tinui, a small town near Masterton in 1900. He worked as a farmhand before he sailed off to war at age 15 in 1916. He fought in France and Belgium. When he came home from war he was still 2 years under the age limit of how old you had to be to go to war. Stan was just a just a young boy who lived on a farm in New Zealand...
During the war in France, my great great uncle and great grandfather were fighting in Picardie. At the same time Epsom Girls was founded and my great grandmother began attending there from day one. This is a bit of their story from before they met.
Beginning of Epsom Girls – February 1917
One of the foundation pupils at Epsom, May Simpson was just 16 when the school opened. Many of the girls’ fathers, brothers, cousins and uncles were fighting in WWI and the whole community was struggling...
VERDUN
A short view of the most important moment of French WW1 history. The attrition battle of Verdun in 1916 and now the most sacred place in French memory of that war. It is studied in all the classes and some pupils of 3e visited those sites with Mrs Jacquot & Mrs Strub. Among them some 3e euro: they want to share it with you !
Un aperçu du plus important moment de l'histoire française de la Grande Guerre. La bataille d'usure de Verdun en 1916 et désormais l'endroit le plus sacré dans...
