Two weeks ago we visited the Somme 1916 Albert Museum with the school . This visit helped us to realize how soldiers lived in the trenches during the war. Then we went to La Boisselle to see the mine crater where each year on the 1st of July a ceremony is organised to commemorate the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. We send you a photo of the group of pupils who are going to work on our project this year. Our teachers and the English speaking guide also took us to the Tiepval Memorial which commemorates more than 72205 men from the British and South African who were declared missing in the Somme between 1915 and March 1918. We also visited the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel where we can still see the "scars' of the war. You can still see the trenches and that makes it easier to imagine the battlefield. We found these memorials very moving and it is now easier for us to start writing letters and poems because this trip helped us to imagine how unbearable life must have been for the soldiers of all nationalities and their families.
We have prepared leaflets to present these different places and memorials because we know you have planned to visit the Somme Battlefields when you come and visit us. We' ll send them very soon.
Tomorrow, a group of our class is going to start the work on the wall of remembrance with the artist !
Hoping to hear from you soon ( we know it's the end your half-term break, so enjoy it !)
