Bonjour à tous,
On Friday the 11th April, my Mum and I went to the launch of the children's book 'Jim's Letters'. The story is written by Glyn Harper a Professor of War Studies at Massey University, with illustrations by Christchurch based artist Jenny Cooper. The pair also worked on the bestselling children's book 'Le Quesnoy', the story of the New Zealand liberation of the French town held by German forces in WWI. 'Jim's Letters' is a story told through letters between a young man named Jim...
April the 25th saw me, along with many others throughout New Zealand, Australia and the rest of the world, attend an annual Anzac Day service. Because of the school holidays, I was able to go to our small local community service, held in the Heriot community centre. Attending this service was like a full circle for me, as it has been many years since I last went to the Heriot Anzac Day commemorations. In fact, the last time I went to the service was when I did a reading as a Cub Scout in...
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
ANZAC Day Dawn Service
For ANZAC Day this year I attended a local dawn service at the Anzac Oval in Winton, which despite the weather, had yet another large turnout with people of all ages. After the service I joined many others for a morning tea put on by the local RSA. This was an awesome opportunity to hear stories and...
Cette dernière mois il y avais beaucoup d'attention des commemorations pour le jour d'ANZAC. 2014 marks the 99th anniversary of the devastating Gallipoli campaign, and New Zealand’s involvement in the war beginning.
This month I went to an exhibit at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery that showed photographs of ANZAC cenotaphs, taken by Laurence Aberhart.
It was strange to think that in almost every town in New Zealand (and Australia) there is a cenotaph with a collection of names of those...
Welcome to my second Ambassadors Blog!
Here's the transcript:
Bonjour !
McColl.
{I tried to find information about my great-great uncle; but unfortunately it was very difficult. I...
Bonjour,
Je vais évaluer deux clips vidéo qui montrent de façon saisissante le changement dans les attitudes envers la Première Guerre mondiale à travers l'ouverture des archives et le développement de la technologie.

Hello again!
Its been a whole month already. I have unfortunately been snowed under with school work and as much as I hate to admit it, Young Ambassadors has taken a bit of a backseat! I will make sure that this won’t happen too often and that I keep chipping away at my project.
Over the past week I have been getting in contact with local papers to promote the sharedhistories site and Young Ambassadors trip. I am hoping that they will get back in contact with me soon so I can share what we...
The last couple of weeks I have been busy working towards completing a history research internal assessment - a very long but worthwhile process. I was luckily able to work this internal in parallel with my Young Ambassador inquiry, meaning that over the month since my last blog entry, I have been able to kill two birds with one stone. The outline of the history internal is to “research one historical event or place that is of significance to New Zealanders.” I stated the aim of my research...
Salut à tous!
I would like to start off by thanking the Awapuni Rotary and Milson Rotary Clubs from Palmerston North for their very generous donations towards the cost of the Young Ambassadors trip. It is much appreciated, and I look forward to speaking to them about the trip and my project outcomes.
On the 18th of March, the Manawatu Standard published an article about the Young Ambassadors Tour. I have included a picture of the article above. There is an important correction I would like to...
Bonjour tout le monde!
Firstly, thank you to everyone for all the help and support I have received so far. The amount of positive feedback and support I’ve had from students, teachers, schools and my local community has been overwhelming and it’s a privilege to be representing you all!
For me, the last few weeks have been pretty busy, as my Young Ambassador’s Project has started to get into full swing. Following my article in The Southland Times, I had an incredible response from people in my...
Bonjour tout le monde! Mars était un mois très occupé pour moi! Ma évaluation de l'histoire était dû cette mois, donc plus de mon temps était dépensé travaillé à fini ça.
In History, our internal was to ‘Research an historical event/place of significance to New Zealanders, using primary and secondary sources’, and my topic was, of course, the First World War. I chose to focus my inquiry on a topic that I could use also for my Young Ambassador personal inquiry, so I researched ‘Soldier’s lives...
Qu’est-ce que vous associez avec la guerre ?
J’ai demandé cette question à plusieurs personnes sur Facebook et j’ai reçu ces réponses:
Le mort, les soldats, les hommes se battant, les jeunes, le patriotisme, les hommes.
We think of our men, our boys, barely 18, saying farewell to their families as they sail off to fight for their country. We think of loyalty, camaraderie, brotherhood. We think of blood, violence, the fragility of human life. We think of the creators of war, the men behind the...
