Of the misery of war - Nos Fils Nos Familles

Of the misery of war - Nos Fils Nos Familles

Stan Stanfield.

Stan Stanfield is my Great-Grandfather. He fought in several of the battles in World War One. Sidney George Stanfield (Stan) was born in Tinui, a small town near Masterton in 1900.  He worked as a farmhand before he sailed off to war at age 15 in 1916. He fought in France and Belgium. When he came home from war he was still 2 years under the age limit of how old you had to be to go to war. Stan was just a just a young boy who lived on a farm in New Zealand...

My great grand mother during the war - Nos Fils Nos Familles

My great grand mother during the war - Nos Fils Nos Familles

During the war in France, my great great uncle and great grandfather were fighting in Picardie. At the same time Epsom Girls was founded and my great grandmother began attending there from day one. This is a bit of their story from before they met.

Beginning of Epsom Girls – February 1917

One of the foundation pupils at Epsom, May Simpson was just 16 when the school opened.  Many of the girls’ fathers, brothers, cousins and uncles were fighting in WWI and the whole community was struggling...

Some letters and this terrible telegram... Nos Fils Nos Familles

Fiona Hamilton

My great-great-great-grandfather was one of those out of many who gave his life in order to bring peace for later generations. Although I could not find many records of my great-great-great-grandfather I do have a few. I asked my grandmother if she had anything that could be of help for this report and she sent me a box that my great-great-great- grandfather’s sister kept during The Great War. Although there is only two letters in the box I also found the death telegram for my great-great-great...

Nos Fils Nos Familles Project at Epsom Girls

Year 10 French

From Year 9 to Year 13, we have integrated components of the WW1 Commemoration project into our curriculum and assessment.  Year 10 students have just completed a cultural project where they have explored the historical links between New Zealand and France through a RAFTS assignment. Several of the girls researched a soldier who was a relative and explored through family history his life before and after the war.  Then they responded with a product of some sort.

Following this post we feature...

Nos Fils Nos Familles: Le paquet est arrivé! Un grand merci!

Anne and Maria

Greetings to our friends in Chauny.

It was with great pleasure that I found in my pigeon hole yesterday morning a package with noticeably French writing on the label.  The French staff opened it with anticipation and pleasure.  Inside we found four group projects and some brochures on visits and sites in the Chauny area related to our project and to our pending trip, a thoughtful gift for our history teacher, Marsha, who is on maternity leave, a packet of bleuet seeds, and a card with kind...
