Online exhibition

I recently came across this WWI online exhibition on the Auckland Libraries website (which also takes physical form at the Central City library) which was very informative and interesting. Of special interest to me were, of course, documents and other ephemera related to women.

This British poster from from 1917 targets women to encourage their husbands, sons and brothers to fight by reinforcing the idea that men are not worthy unless they are willing to fight for their country.

(from website) Thousands of women knitted socks and other comforts, baked cakes, gathered books, magazines and tobacco to send to the troops. These were packed and sent to distribution centres in England run by organisations such as the Red Cross.

NZ Soldiers Medical Club Flyer - established by Ettie Rout (!!!!!!) as part of her ongoing campaign to reduce the spread of venereal disease among the troops.

There's lots more here.

J’espère que tout le monde a eu des bonnes vacances ! Il reste juste 3 semaines d’école !
