Je n'oublierai jamais...

Je n'oublierai jamais...

Man, what an adventure! Having returned from our trip to France I feel accomplished, for having carried out my project; amazed, at all the things I’ve seen and the experiences we all shared together and lastly, proud to say I did my duty as a Young Ambassador.

Seeing the places I researched was unforgettable. The scale of The Great War was always visible, through the landscape and the ever-present cemeteries scattered around the countryside of North Eastern France. Each one commemorated men...

La Préparation

La Préparation

Bonjour tout le monde

We only leave this Saturday and I am very excited to depart on this once in a lifetime journey. The path so far has been enjoyable and thought-provoking. We have been able to meet so many amazing people, including our French counterparts, and I can’t wait to see them again. It is going be an adventure we’ll all, never forgot

These last few weeks getting my research in its final stages before we leave has been stressful but very interesting. Getting to know more about...

"Discovering Family Footsteps"

Bonjour tout le monde,

My name is Shani McMullan, and I am super excited to be part of the Young Ambassador’s group for 2018!

To me, being an ambassador is about relationships. I went on a high school French trip two years ago, and as part of it we visited a school in Nice. It was so interesting to meet young people like us, yet who lived completely different lives. I didn't have too much of a chance to bond with any of the students then, but this time round I’m hoping to make more...

"Standing in the Footsteps of History"

"Standing in the Footsteps of History"

After coming back from France and reflecting on the visit there, I can truly say that it was an amazing experience for me and everyone else on the tour.

The 14 days that we were there for seems like such a short time now, but with all the visits and activities planned for us each day, there was so much to take in, and every day was a great learning opportunity!

He Tangata

He Tangata

A Few Images from the Archives

A Few Images from the Archives

While uncovering the story of my great grandfather, I became fascinated with the detail of the various war records - whether they be the enlistment forms or the day-to-day journals written from the field. Here are some interesting bits and pieces I came across on my travels...

The cover photo shows my great grandfather's original attestation for general service when he would have signed up to go over to Samoa within the first few days of war breaking out. This is the second form he would have...
