In the National Library of New Zealand, called the Alexander Turnbull Library, in the capital city Wellington, there is an exhibition about WWI. It is called “World War One. A Contemporary Conversation” and is worth a visit if you are on holiday in Wellington.
On display are some information relating to our Shared Histories project. There are two display’s that discuss about the conscientious objector Archibald Baxter. He was sent to France in the First World War and was one of the soldiers...
We have made a huge amount of progress on our website now, just proof reading to go! It has been great having the students able to really explore the areas that interest them and to see the links between NZ and France.
We have been busy planning our trip to France in Sept 2015 and can't wait to meet everyone at Lycee Corneille! We are spending a couple of weeks with them in Paris before heading north where we will be based in Arras so we can visit La Carriere Wellington and other significant...
French pupils started to work on our project this week. They had to study the biographies of two soldiers from Nelson and buried in our local cemetery. We have access to their military and medical information thanks to the Archives New Zealand website. Pupils experienced a new kind of exercice. They had to work on primary sources in history, and, since documents were partly legible, the first task was to decipher them. They took it like a game, as if they were investigators of the past. Even if...
Salut,
Today I began my string of school visits speaking to two Year 12 History classes from Baradene College about the Shared Histories project and our trip. It was great to talk to them especially since they have already done great work with the project and will have the opportunity to travel to France next year on what will be an amazing trip.
I am heading towards exams now but I am looking forward to talking to other schools from around Auckland in the coming months. It was great to...
Josh Hansen, one of the Young Ambassadors for Shared Histories, visited Baradene College and talked about his project and his trip to France and Belgium.
This year I tied the project to some of my internal assessment at level 1, and chose to craft a 1.5 Writing Portfolio task around Shared Histories. In cooperation with our partner school in Amiens, my year 11 class set up an exchange of letters and other texts that the students from both countries posted on our wiki (one of the last texts written is attached to this post: a poster).
While the...
A short look back on what we did in France and Belgium in July while we were there for First World War commemorations.
Music is Trojans by Atlas Genius
Fresh crêpes, cobbled streets, photo booths and Parisiens smoking with cool refinement. Polished marble floors with a glassy sheen, wrought-iron lattices and metro stations flashing by in lights of dull grey. These are the things I remember about Paris. As soon as the Young Ambassadors touched down on French soil, we entered a place where history and modernity walk alive in the streets.
Our first week of the tour was a whirlwind of tourist attractions and grand military parades along with...
Incroyable. Emouvant. Passionnant. Amusant. Interessant. There are so many words I could use to describe our trip to France. Ever since I returned to New Zealand people have asked me about my favourite part of the trip. I simply can’t give a single favourite part of the whole 2 weeks. So I will have to break it down into a few highlights which stood out from the others.
Sunday the 13th of July was the first full day we had in France. Naturally, we were all extremely excited to see all of...
