In the heart of the scrum.
16 students at year 11 in NZ
+ Senior students
48 students in FR
The New Zealand students will be investigating the personal backgrounds, overseas postings and military engagements as well as post-war careers (i.e. re-integration) of Wellington College “old boys” present at the 1909 college rugby match and later sent to fight on the Western front. The French students will investigate the emotional and personal impact for these “old boys” of being sent far from home for an uncertain period of time.
"I see this project as an opportunity for year 11 students to use their French in a real world situation with a clear goal. They are already in email and facebook contact and we are adapting internal assessments to accommodate this project.
Extra benefits of this project: a request from senior students in France not involved in this project but who wanted a connection with NZ has resulted in most of year 13 and some of year 12 having penfriends. Here, Year 10 are already asking if they can be involved next year." Jennifer Bush-Daumec.
"Suivi du parcours personnel et militaire de 7 des anciens garçons de Wellington College, dont les membres de l'équipe de rugby de 1909, à travers les 4 années de la Grande Guerre." Carol Lavoine
