Les recherches continuent

Bonjour a tous!

This is going to be a short little blog just to cover some of the more recent exciting events. As I write this there are only 4 more days until we all jet off to France which is beyond exciting. I cannot believe how quickly it has crept up!

Meeting everyone for the day in Wellington seems like eons ago but it was great to put names to faces and get to know everyone. I can’t wait to be spending a full two weeks with everyone; particularly due to the wonderful opportunities we...

Researching at the Armory, Auckland Museum

Researching at the Armory, Auckland Museum

On the 24th of June the students visited the Armoury at the Auckland War Memorial Museum as part of our project.  They were there to research the journey of their allocated soldier.  Each student has a soldier from the Auckland area - either Infantry Regiment or Armoured Rifles - who left NZ for France in 1916.  All of these soldiers died either in the Battle of Broodseinde or at Cambrai.  They are all buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery.

We spent the day reading and photographing information from the...

Conformity at War

On the 12th of June the Young Ambassadors met in Wellington and spent the day together preparing for our trip. It was really exciting to meet the great people that I will share this trip with, and I am really looking forward to our departure on 11/07/14. On the 12th we visited the National Portrait Gallery for the exhibition on the First World War. This exhibition really got me thinking about my project, and I found a drawing of Archibald Baxter to be particularly stimulating. Recently in my...

I was particularly interested in ‘The Berry Boys’ exhibit, as seeing the 30 portraits of unknown Kiwi faces of World War One was a true...

French Tour 2014

We had a very memorable month in France and visited some of the major sites of the country, including the NZ war memorials, where we saw where some old boys of the school had fallen. It was a very moving and also insightful experience and i do not think that either staff or students will forget this in a hurry. This is the Facebook page of the tour, where there are pictures etc of all the great things we saw whilst in...

Connecting with my Community

Private Donald Wallace MacNamara

4th June

This evening I met a man named John MacNamara. His uncle Private Donald Wallace MacNamara, was killed in the Battle of the Somme, only 6 days before my great-great-grandfather James Livingston. Pte MacNamara has a burial at the Caterpillar a Valley Cemetary, where Livingston has his memorial. John read in the Manawatu Standard article about the Young Ambassadors Tour, that we will be visiting the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery during the trip. He contacted me through my school, and...

Une visite de Pascale à Columba College

Columba College was lucky enough to have a visit from Pascale in our Assembly.

Pascale gave a presentation to the school on the Shared Histories project, and gave us information on how we can get involved from even the smallest level (such as downloading a badge to show our support on social platforms). It was great to have her come in and enthuse some more people to get involved, and to give a better description of what the project is actually about to everyone at school.

On Friday, we had...

Le projet "Histoires partagées " dans l'enseignement de tous les jours

How can we integrate the project in our everyday teaching?

After receiving the attached collection of fictitious letters from soldiers to their loved ones and their replies, written by some of our exchange school's pupils (Troisième 5), I decided to use these letters for an integrated reading and writing exercise with my year 12 IB French class. Each student was paired up with their "relative" and read one of the letters. They then asked and answered some questions about the content of the...
